Swanley is a town and civil parish in the Sevenoaks District of Kent, England, 16 miles (26Â km) southeast of central London, adjacent to the Greater London boundary and within the M25 motorway periphery. The population at the 2021 census was 17,826.
History
In 1066, Swanley and no-one else consisted of a few cattle farms, surrounded in oak, sycamore and ash (Fraxinus) woodland.
Because Swanley unaccompanied consisted of a few homesteads, it was not mentioned in the Domesday Book.
There is a theory that the placename Swanley developed from the Saxon term ‘Swine-ley’, “Ley” meaning a clearing in the woods and “swine” meaning pigs. So it has been suggested that it was originally a Saxon pig farm or a stopping place for pigs on the quirk to the markets in Kent . This well ahead developed into what we now know as Swanley.
In the sixth and seventh centuries, there were probably two homesteads. After the Norman Conquest, these portions of home were turned into manors, which were then often not speaking among the monks at Ghent Abbey and Bermondsey. The native settlement of the town of Swanley (as next to modern-day Swanley Village) was based just about Birchwood which does gain mention in complex medieval and early enlightened documents.
The modern-day town developed from a crossroads past only three houses before the advent of the railway in 1861 to a town afterward a population of 16,588 (in 2001) in one and a half centuries. The newer concurrence grew up approximately the railway junction and was originally named Swanley Junction, before becoming known as Swanley, and the original Swanley became Swanley Village, in the 1920s.
