Cockington is a village close Torquay, in the Torbay district, in the ceremonial county of Devon, Devon. It has passй cottages within its boundaries, and is virtually two miles from the middle of Torquay. Bus service 62 (Torquay circular) calls at the village five get older per day (Mon-Fri) and is operated by Torbay Buses.
History
The village was probably founded 2,500 years ago during the Iron Age similar to evidence of two hill forts upon either side of Cockington valley. The evidence from this village shows that it was primarily a fishing and farming village. The first certified documentation of the village was in the 10th century.[citation needed] The manor was owned by Alric the Saxon, before William Hostiarus, William de Falesia and Robert FitzMartin, who passed it the length of to his son Roger, who renounced his post to become Roger de Cockington. The Cockington relatives owned Cockington Estate from 1048–1348. The Cary family (this particular branch included George Carey (c. 1541–1616)) owned the court from 1375 to 1654. It was subsequently sold to the Mallock relatives a intimates of wealthy silversmiths from Exeter, who owned it from 1654 to 1932 like they sold the land to the Torquay Corporation.
In 1921 the parish had a population of 279. On 1 October 1928 the parish was abolished and merged later than Torquay.
