Swanley is a town and civil parish in the Sevenoaks District of Kent, England, 16 miles (26Â km) southeast of central London, adjacent to the Greater London boundary and within the M25 motorway periphery. The population at the 2021 census was 17,826.
History
In 1066, Swanley without help consisted of a few cattle farms, surrounded in oak, sycamore and ash (Fraxinus) woodland.
Because Swanley on your own consisted of a few homesteads, it was not mentioned in the Domesday Book.
There is a theory that the placename Swanley developed from the Saxon term ‘Swine-ley’, “Ley” meaning a clearing in the woods and “swine” meaning pigs. So it has been suggested that it was originally a Saxon pig farm or a stopping place for pigs on the way to the markets in Kent . This unconventional developed into what we now know as Swanley.
In the sixth and seventh centuries, there were probably two homesteads. After the Norman Conquest, these portions of home were turned into manors, which were subsequently often estranged among the monks at Ghent Abbey and Bermondsey. The indigenous settlement of the town of Swanley (as adjacent to modern-day Swanley Village) was based something like Birchwood which does gain mention in unconventional medieval and early unprejudiced documents.
The modern-day town developed from a crossroads taking into consideration only three houses back the advent of the railway in 1861 to a town bearing in mind a population of 16,588 (in 2001) in one and a half centuries. The newer agreement grew up more or less the railway junction and was originally named Swanley Junction, before becoming known as Swanley, and the native Swanley became Swanley Village, in the 1920s.
