Rugeley ( ROOJ-lee) is a announce town and civil parish in the Cannock Chase District, in Staffordshire, England. It lies on the north-eastern edge of Cannock Chase against the River Trent; it is situated 8 miles (13Â km) north of Lichfield, 10 miles (16Â km) south-east of Stafford, 5 miles (8.0Â km) north-east of Hednesford and 11 miles (18Â km) south-west of Uttoxeter. At the 2021 Census, the population was 24,386.
Rugeley is twinned next Western Springs, Illinois and, in July 1962, both towns made telephone history on national television in imitation of the chairman of Rugeley Urban District Council made the first telephone call via the supplementary Telstar satellite to the mayor of Western Springs. History
The town, historically known as Rudgeley or Ridgeley, is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. This read out is thought to be derived from ‘Ridge lee’, or ‘the hill on height of the field’. Rugeley was considered royal house and Cannock Chase was considered a royal forest. In 1189, Rugeley was sold to the Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry by King Richard I the Lionheart. Rugeley was still relatively small at this point.
By 1259, Rugeley had grown significantly enough to be established the right to sustain a weekly market. To this morning there is a weekly outdoor spread around held in the town.
