Beccles ( BEK-əlz) is a present town and civil parish in the English county of Suffolk. The town is shown upon the milestone as 109 miles (175 km) from London via the A145 and A12 roads, 98 miles (158 km) north-east of London as the crow flies, 16 miles (26 km) south-east of Norwich and 33 miles (53 km) north-northeast of the county town of Ipswich. Nearby towns include Lowestoft to the east and Great Yarmouth to the north-east. The town lies on the River Waveney upon the edge of The Broads National Park.
It had a population at the 2011 census of 10,123. Worlingham is a suburb of Beccles; the summative population is 13,868. Beccles twinned in the tone of Petit-Couronne in France in 1978.
History
The herald is conjectured to be derived from Becc-Liss* (Brittonic=Small-court). However, also offered is Bece-laes* (Old English=Meadow by Stream), as capably as a contraction of Beata Ecclesia, the herald of the Christian temple erected c. 960 by the monks of the monastery of Bury. Once a well-to-do Anglian riverport, it lies in the Waveney valley and is a popular boating centre.
The town was first arranged its Charter upon 2 July 1584 by Elizabeth I, under the read out of the Corporation of Beccles Fen. This was subsequently confirmed by James I upon 19 May 1605.
