Undercliffe is an eastern section of the suburb of Earlwood located in South Western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Undercliffe is situated 10 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central issue district within the local government Place of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown.

History

19th Century

The Place was initially official as Undercliffe Estate during the 1840s via land assent due to the presence of one or more enduring dwellings. The declare is derived from the presence of a prominent outcrop of Sydney sandstone which forms the bedrock of the greater Sydney area. The quarrying of this sandstone in the middle of Wolli Creek and Cooks River provided the first local industry as skillfully as material for the production of new homes.

A notable landowner during this epoch was East India Company Judge James Donnithorne (1773-1852). Donnithorne owned shares in the Undercliffe Estate, which on his death, were passed to his daughter Eliza Emily (1826-1886), a recluse who leased out the house until her death. It was later sold and eventually subdivided for housing.
