Alameda ( AL-ษ™-MEE-dษ™; Spanish: [alaหˆmeรฐa]; Spanish for โ€œtree-lined pathโ€) is a city in Alameda County, California, United States, located in the East Bay region of the Bay Area. The city is primarily located upon Alameda Island, but with spans Bay Farm Island and Coast Guard Island, as capably as a few supplementary smaller islands in San Francisco Bay. As of the 2020 census, the cityโ€™s population was 78,280.

Alameda occupies what was originally a peninsula linked to Oakland. Much of it was low-lying and marshy. The superior ground approachable and next-door parts of what is now downtown Oakland were the site of one of the largest coastal oak forests in the world. Spanish colonists called the area Encinal, meaning โ€œforest of evergreen oakโ€. Alameda is Spanish for โ€œgrove of poplar treesโ€ or โ€œtree-lined avenueโ€. It was agreed as the make known of the city in 1853 by popular vote.

The inhabitants at the time of the initiation of the Spanish in the late 18th century were a local band of the Ohlone tribe. The peninsula was included in the gigantic Rancho San Antonio decided in 1820 to Luis Peralta by the Spanish king who claimed California. The ascend was complex confirmed by the Republic of Mexico on its independence in 1821 from Spain.
