The Place that became Los Angeles was originally inhabited by the original Tongva people and highly developed claimed by Juan Rodrรญguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542. The city was founded upon September 4, 1781, under Spanish officer Felipe de Neve, on the village of Yaanga. It became a portion of Mexico in 1821 when the Mexican War of Independence.
