Hartford was founded in 1635 and is in the middle of the oldest cities in the United States. It is house to the countryโs oldest public art museum (Wadsworth Atheneum), the oldest publicly funded park (Bushnell Park), the oldest constantly published newspaper (the Hartford Courant), and the second-oldest subsidiary school (Hartford Public High School). It was home to the oldest โasylum for the deaf and dumbโ the (American School for the Deaf), founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet in 1817. It is also home to the Mark Twain House, where the author wrote his most well-known works and raised his family, among new historically significant sites. Mark Twain wrote in 1868, โOf all the beautiful towns it has been my fortune to see this is the chief.โ
Hartford has been the sole capital of Connecticut back 1875. Before then, New Haven and Hartford alternated as dual capitals, as part of the succession by which the Colony of New Haven was absorbed into the Colony of Connecticut in 1664.
