Edison is a township located in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Situated in Central New Jersey within the core of the state’s Raritan Valley region, Edison is a poster hub (home to Menlo Park Mall and Little India) and is a bedroom community of New York City within the New York metropolitan area.
As of the 2020 United States census, the township was the state’s sixth-most-populous municipality, with a population of 107,588, an layer of 7,621 (+7.6%) from the 2010 census adjoin of 99,967, which in direction reflected an addition of 2,280 (+2.3%) from the 97,687 counted in the 2000 census.
What is now Edison Township was originally incorporated as Raritan Township by an war of the New Jersey Legislature upon March 17, 1870, from portions of both Piscataway Township and Woodbridge Township. The township got its native name from the Raritan native people. Portions of the township were taken to form Metuchen upon March 20, 1900, and Highland Park upon March 15, 1905. The reveal was officially distorted to Edison Township upon November 10, 1954, in praise of inventor Thomas Edison, who had his main laboratory in the Menlo Park section of the township.
