Brooklyn is a borough of New York City, coextensive with Kings County, located on the westernmost edge of Long Island in the U.S. state of New York. Kings County is the most populous county in the State of New York, and the second-most-densely-populated county in the United States, behind New York County (Manhattan). Brooklyn is furthermore New York City’s most populous borough, with 2,736,074 residents in 2020. If Brooklyn were an independent city, it would be the third most populous in the U.S. after the burning of New York City and Los Angeles, and ahead of Chicago.
Named after the Dutch town of Breukelen, Brooklyn shares a link up with the borough of Queens. It has several bridge and tunnel associates to the borough of Manhattan, across the East River, and is similar to Staten Island by pretentiousness of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. With a land area of 70.82 square miles (183.4ย km) and a water area of 26 square miles (67ย km), Kings County is the welcome of New York’s fourth-smallest county by land Place and third smallest by total area.
Brooklyn was founded by the Dutch in the 17thย century and grew into a busy port city by the 19thย century. On Januaryย 1, 1898, after a long political advocate and public-relations battle during the 1890s, in accordance to the further municipal charter of “Greater New York”, Brooklyn was consolidated in and annexed (along with extra areas) to form the current five-borough structure of New York City. The borough continues to maintain some sure culture. Many Brooklyn neighborhoods are ethnic enclaves. Having a larger Jewish population than Jerusalem, the borough has been described as “the most Jewish spot on Earth”, with Jews forming almost a quarter of its population. Brooklyn’s recognized motto, displayed on the borough seal and flag, is Eendraght Maeckt Maght, which translates from early innovative Dutch as ‘Unity makes strength’.
