Alexandria is an independent city in the northern region of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. It lies upon the western bank of the Potomac River nearly 7 miles (11ย km) south of downtown Washington, D.C. Alexandria is the third largest “principal city” of the Washington metropolitan Place which is allocation of the larger Washington-Baltimore amass statistical area.

In 2020, the population was 159,467, making it the 6th most populous city in Virginia and the 169th most populous city in the nation. The city’s estimated population has grown by 1% annually previously 2010 on average.

Like the dismount of Northern Virginia and Central Maryland, modern Alexandria has been influenced by its proximity to the U.S. capital.
